Getting mailed notices from your insurance
company can be un-nerving. You may see the words
"cancellation", or many even "non-renewal". It is important
to know the difference between the two, as they are VERY
different.
A cancellation notice states that you no
longer have coverage from your insurance company. This can
simply be because your insurance policy is closing in on its
expiration, or perhaps if a payment is received too late, amongst
other reasons. In most cases, you just need to contact the
insurance company and straighten out whatever reason the notice
was sent to you.
When you receive a non-renewal notice
from the insurance company, they are telling you that they no
longer wish to insure you. Once your policy is up, they will
not accept a renewal from you. Don't take it personally,
there may be many reasons they may have chosen to no longer insure
you. It can be as simple as your company no longer offering
your specific policy, or maybe they have chosen to discontinue
business in your state. Non-renewal can also be a result of
a bad driving record. You can choose to exercise your right
to appeal this decision, but chances are they will not change
their mind about the decision. Once this happens, you will
have a couple of different options you will need to consider.
This can include being uninsured. This
would not be advisable for obvious reasons. Your more
reasonable options include possibly changing any risk or
behavior that made your insurance company want to stop insuring
you, if applicable. Probably the best option is to find
another insurance company.
